The rocket launched at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and flew to an altitude of 5,632 feet. The rocket carried two scientific payloads. The first payload measured the airframe temperature changes on the rocket while in flight. The second payload measured the oxygen concentration of the atmosphere at one-mile high.

The team visited the Marshall Space Flight Center and toured several areas in the facility. The team’s rocket was displayed in a rocket fair at MSFC on Thursday along with rockets from ten other high schools and organizations and from 19 universities.

The Student Launch Initiative project began in July 2008 and a proposal was submitted in late September 2008.  The project will end on May 22, 2009.

April 10 - MGHS Rocket Team Soars Into National Finals – Again

Organizers for the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) announced on Friday that Mulberry Grove Rocket Team #1 had qualified as one of the top 100 teams in the world’s largest model rocket challenge. As a result, the team has been invited to the national fly-off at Great Plains, Virginia on May 16th.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Mulberry Grove High School has had a team in the finals. The team is lead by senior Ryan , project manager and rocket designer for Team #1. Ryan has been a member of the team since its beginning in the Fall of 2005 and will make his fourth and final appearance at the competition next month.

Other members of the team are: Seniors Tyler , Sammatha , and Justin , and Juniors Taylor and Bryant . This will be the second appearance in the finals for Tyler, Samantha, Taylor and Bryant. This is Justin’s first year on the team.

High school math and physics teacher John Paine is sponsor of the TARC team and the project leader of the NASA Student Launch Initiative team. Paine said, “ This rocket may be the best the team has designed and built over the past four years in the competition.”

After a tangled chute and a 50th place finish at the 2006 finals, the team posted a 7th place finish in 2007 and a second place finish in 2008. Last year’s finished earned the team an invitation by NASA to submit a proposal for the 2009 Student Launch Initiative. The proposal was accepted and Mulberry Grove High School became one of eleven schools or organizations to take part.  This week the NASA SLI team will fly a high-powered rocket in Huntsville, AL to a mile high with a scientific payload they designed.  Students members of the SLI team include Ryan, Tyler, and Justin from the TARC team and Mitchell and Scott .

Mulberry Grove High School also entered a second team in the competition this year. The team had all first year members. Team #2 members are Ethan , Shelby , Danielle , Kayla , Kayla , DeAnna , Ashley, Scott and Heather.

The competition this year was to fly to exactly 750 feet in altitude, total flight duration from lift-off to touchdown of exactly 45 seconds, and carry a raw egg that had to be placed on its side during the flight and not break. Teams are awarded a point for every foot above or below 750 feet. The time difference from 45 seconds is doubled which adds that many points to the score.  A cracked or broken eggs is disqualification. A perfect score is ‘zero’.

Team #1’s qualifying score was a 4.14. The altitude reached was 753 feet and the time was 44.43 seconds.
